Our Story So Far

We started out in 1973 as a family-run company in Ripponden, West Yorkshire and in a short period of time we had cornered the market for commercial laundry. Over the years, we’ve added new divisions and products and grown into a truly powerful force for commercial innovation. Use our timeline to learn more about our history.

  1. 1973

    JLA Opens for Business

    We opened our first office in Ripponden, a village in West Yorkshire, and we’re still based here today!

  2. 1982

    Launch of Rental Solution

    We took the big step of making commercial laundry equipment more accessible and affordable for our customers by offering our first version of a rental solution.

  3. 1984

    JLA Moves HQ and Opens First Contact Centre

    We needed to expand the JLA team in order to meet the rising demand for our great services like Total Care, and so we moved into our current Head Office (still in Ripponden) and opened our first contact centre.

  4. Launch of Total Care


    Our innovative Total Care promise is older than you might think! By building on our existing rental solution, we were the first to bring together great machines and ongoing maintenance for simple monthly payments and no repair bills – ever.

  5. Employee Count Reaches 150


    As our company continued to grow, we added more customer service team members, contact centre employees, engineers and sales managers so we could continue to fulfil our service promise to our customers.

  6. Launch of Money-Back Total Care Guarantee


    To further strengthen our Total Care guarantee, we launched a promise to our customers that if we couldn’t get an engineer out to their location within eight working hours, we would pay them £100. This promise is still going strong today.

  7. Circuit Managed Laundries and JLA Join Forces


    We teamed up with Circuit Managed Laundries to establish an unrivalled presence in the managed laundries market, pooling resources and expanding operations in universities, holiday parks and key worker sites.

  8. Launch of Ground-Breaking OTEX Ozone Disinfection System


    We launched our ground-breaking OTEX ozone disinfection system, completely changing the way healthcare businesses, the NHS and care homes tackled the difficult task of infection control. To date, it is the only ozone-based laundry solution to receive RRP1 status.

  9. Employee count reaches 300


    We started to recruit more engineers and technical experts to help us develop and promote our growing product range, as well as more team members in support roles to help JLA continue to grow.

  10. JLA Wins National Customer Service Award


    We won formal recognition for our excellent customer service and quick engineer responses, receiving the National Customer Service Award for Field Management.

  11. JLA Receives Backing from HgCapital


    We received financial backing from Europe’s fastest-growing private equity group to drive further expansion of our product ranges and our business.

  12. Launch of JLA Clean Division


    We launched our innovative detergent range, which was specifically designed to maximise the performance of our machines and provide customers with even better wash quality.

  13. Launch of JLA Warewashing Division


    We used our expertise in commercial laundry to launch our Warewashing division, offering top-tier dishwashers, glasswashers and utensil washers to the market.

  14. Employee Count Reaches 400


    Rapid growth in our product divisions meant that we needed more people and resources to help us meet our business goals and continue to offer great service.

  15. Launch of JLA Medical Division


    Not content to rest on our laurels, we launched our Medical division to develop sluice room and infection control solutions for the health and social care sectors.

  16. Launch of JLA Catering Division


    Following the successful launch of our Warewashing division, we began to offer dedicated, professional kitchen solutions encompassing cooking, refrigeration, and cooling as well as cleaning.

  17. Employee Count Reaches 600


    Following divisional expansions and strategic acquisitions, we recruited more team members, with 600 employees now working for the JLA Group as they helped us to expand our business.

  18. Employee Count Reaches 700


    Following significant organic growth and the acquisition of key companies, JLA recruited more engineers, bringing the total to 250 nationwide.



    We opened a brand new contact centre in Salford Quays, Manchester to accommodate our growing workforce.

  20. Employee Count Reaches 800


    As we continued to grow, supporting current customers and reaching new ones, we hired more people across our two offices and within our network of field engineers and sales managers, with the goal of reaching 1,000 employees by 2020.



    We launched our Heating division, encompassing boilers, water heaters and hot water cylinders, to provide unique and energy-efficient heating solutions for a variety of markets.

  22. Launch of Fire Safety Division


    The launch of fire safety solutions complements our existing heating, laundry and catering services and allows our customers to benefit from having the most critical areas of their business covered by one supply and service partner.

  23. JLA Receives Backing From Cinven


    We received financial backing from Cinven, a global Private Equity firm founded in `1977. Their investment will help us to continue to grow our business and expand our product offering.
