JLA Seeks Ambitious Growth Under New Owners

JLA launched its consumables division, JLA Clean, six years ago and, following a Group ownership takeover by private equity investors Cinven last year is now looking to build on its success through further acquisitions in the industry.

With over 45 years’ heritage as the market-leader in laundry, having grown from a small independent business in West Yorkshire, JLA is now the leading critical service solutions provider, working across the commercial laundry, catering, heating, detergents and fire safety industries. The Group has thousands of customers across a diverse set of sectors including care homes, healthcare, hotels, social housing and schools and offers equipment and maintenance solutions as well as its unique all-encompassing package, Total Care.
The JLA Clean division offers a comprehensive range of laundry and catering detergents designed to mirror the same high quality of its equipment. It delivers a professional standard of cleaning which is relied upon in many busy commercial businesses.

Part of JLA’s success has resulted from the relationship it holds with companies it has acquired, one of which is Proton Washrite, a warewashing and consumables business that JLA acquired in 2013. Richard Barron, Managing Director at Proton Washrite, said of the acquisition: “We hadn’t considered selling the business until we started discussions with JLA, but the benefits have been significant. The approach JLA take has meant that we have been able to retain our small company values and the benefits this offers our customers, while still enjoying the advantages that come from being a part of a much larger group.”
Following recent investment from Cinven, one of Europe’s largest private equity houses, JLA are well positioned to continue to grow both organically and through further strategic acquisitions.  Inorganic growth is a fundamental part of JLA’s growth strategy and the business is actively seeking acquisition opportunities across all verticals, including consumables.

Graham Latta, Group Commercial Director, said: “We are delighted to have Cinven on board.  They have the ambition to continue to expand JLA both organically and through acquisition over the coming years. JLA has significant acquisition experience, having acquired 18 businesses to date, and has refined an efficient process run by a dedicated internal team. We work closely with incumbent owners to ensure a tailored arrangement, offer best value and ensure a smooth transition for the staff and customers that become part of the JLA group. Consumables is a key area of focus for us at the moment, and we’re excited to work together with other businesses to deliver the great service our customers have come to expect.”
